One Answer to Addiction

All of the years that I'd spent in the bars.
Throwing my cash away. Smashing my cars.
I truly am lucky that I'm still alive.
I had to escape - find a way to survive.

In quitting my drinking, I must have been good;
I did it so often, as long as I could.
Only one problem that didn't seem fit:
Although I would stop, I just couldn't stay quit.

I tried moderation - to use on occasion,
But couldn't resist my addictive persuasion.
I set certain times, that to use was O.K.
Like only tomorrow and maybe today.

I even tried switching - to use diff'rent drugs.
I'd hit off a joint, then I'd do a few chugs.
Nothing was working. I only got worse.
Seemed I would die from this miserable curse.

I turned to my God as I fell down to pray.
Went into treatment. Discovered A.A.
Fin'ly a program that worked when applied.
Helped me face up to the facts I'd denied.

When everything else I had tried came to fail,
I found a new program that surely'd prevail.
Twelve simple steps. What a joyous discov'ry!
Thank God for A.A. and my new found recov'ry.
