DEALING WITH ADDICTION |
As addicts and alkies, we most have all learned,
Sobriety's something that has to be earned.
It doesn't come easy. There's no guarantees.
It's hard getting over our using disease.
Many continue to use 'til they die,
Wanting to quit, only failing each try.
Others succumb, never knowing they're ill,
Living with dreams they will never fulfill.
Then there's the rare ones who come to their senses,
Tired of all of their using expenses;
Those who are willing to finally commit,
To do what they have to, to help them stay quit.
Once that they quit, seems their lives are enchanted.
Sobriety's something they soon take for granted.
Next thing they know their sobriety's ended,
Thanks to the meetings they hadn't attended.
Thanks to the sponsor they never did find,
Thanks to the twelve steps to which they were blind,
Thanks to the thought they could do it alone,
Thanks to ignoring the facts they were shown.
Hard to believe after all that we learn,
The life we had left, we could think to return.
Alcohol, heroin, reefer or crack -
Why in the Hell would we want to go back?
We have a chance that so many don't get,
A chance to erase all our pain and regret,
To make our lives better than they've ever been,
A wonderful chance we might not get again.
Sobriety's wonderful. Relapsing stinks.
Please try to abstain from your drugs or your drinks.
Hold on to all the good things you have found;
It's tougher the second and third times around.
Cherish the gift that's been given to you.
Live as you know God is wanting you to.
Sow these new seeds that clean living has planted.
Don't take your sobriety, ever, for granted.
