Getting to Know My God Better

All of my life I had known he existed.
I knew that he loved me, yet still I resisted.
Tried to get close to him several times.
Asked his forgiveness for all of my crimes.

Asked for his help when I felt he was needed.
Tried to commit to him. Never succeeded.
Tried doing service, to earn my reward,
But only as little as I could afford.

Since my addiction spun out of control,
Since I have set this recovery goal,
God is the focus of all I am doing.
He is the reason for all my renewing.

I talk to him now, through the course of my day.
I take time to meditate - take time to pray.
He's better than taking a drink or a pill.
Things go so good when I just do his will.

Not that his will is an eas'ly done task.
That's why I go to my God and I ask,
for knowledge of what he would want me to do,
For strength and for courage to see his plan through.

I find by repeating this simple request,
God, in his wisdom, is somehow expressed.
I have this sereneness, a new sense of peace,
And every day I can feel it increase.

I get a bit closer to God every hour.
I'm starting to witness his life changing power.
I feel that by practicing hard, step eleven,
That right here on Earth, I'm experiencing Heaven.

I'm taking the gamble. I'm shooting the wad.
I'm taking my life and investing in God.
I'm getting to know him much better each day;
In turn I stay sober. He shows me the way.

I take in the sunshine of every new morn.
I swear that I feel like I've just been reborn.
My program is working. I've found my lost pride.
I can't do no wrong, long as God is my guide.
