As the Numbers Begin to Come In

You hear the word hundreds. Who are they kidding?
Thousands upon thousands more likely the bidding.
I speak of the lives that we lost here this day.
The number much larger than folks want to say.

Nothing is certain. One thing I'd say.
The number'll get bigger and bigger each day.
I know where they come from, with all of this mess.
You hate to be wrong with an outrageous guess.

All I can say is prepare for the shock.
The number will change with each tick of the clock.
My guess, 'round ten-thousand*, the answer in store.
Before there is less I would bet there is more.

*Immediately after the attacks, it was believed that upwards of 10,000 people may have perished in the Twin Towers. But evacuation efforts proved amazingly successful. Less than 3,000 actually died, but to the families of those lost, the numbers make little or no difference.
